Bridge Inspection Team Leader (Architecture)

What you'll be challenged to do:

The Morristown, NJ office seeks a Structural/Bridge Engineer to join our established transportation practice as a Team Leader for Bridge Inspections. In this role you will function as the lead inspector supervising the work of less experienced engineers and mentor them as you help to develop their technical and inter-personal skills. Your responsibilities will include coordinating all aspects of the inspection, writing/reviewing inspection reports, load rating preparation/reviewing, and preparing fee proposals for inspection assignments. You may also work with other teams on multi-disciplinary projects, including roadway, traffic, rail, site, and public transit.

 

You will be mentored by our senior staff, and have the opportunity to engage and assist with new project pursuits, including Qualifications and Technical Proposal preparation, and networking opportunities through professional society events.


Essential Responsibilities:

  • Conducts safety inspections of bridges and tunnels and prepares written reports of the conditions of the structures.
  • Performs or leads in-depth inspections using non-destructive testing methods, mechanized access equipment and/or climbing gear.
  • Performs post-incident bridge inspections to determine severity of damage and recommends appropriate actions regarding bridge closures and detours.
  • Coordinates with bridge owners and other agencies on inspection schedules, traffic control, railroad access, navigational channels, etc.
  • Performs lead worker responsibilities, which may include providing general instruction assigning and reviewing work, coaching, and training, providing guidance and instruction in the proper and most efficient methods of accomplishing tasks, and providing input to the direct supervisor on staffing decisions and performance management.
  • Perform other duties as assigned or required.


Qualifications

What you bring to our firm:

  • Bachelor of Science in Civil Engineering from a 4-yr accredited college or university.
  • Minimum of 5 years of related bridge inspection experience.
  • Currently qualify for National Bridge Inspection Standards (NBIS) as a bridge inspection team leader.
  • Completed comprehensive training course based on the FHWA Bridge Inspector's Reference Manual (BIRM) (NHI Course 130055) and be current with refresher requirements (NHI Course 130053).
  • Highly motivated and independent with strong work ethic.
  • Ability and experience to lead the work of others, communicate and maintain proper working relationships.
  • Possess knowledge of bridge inspection methods and procedures.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
  • Strong attention to detail.
  • Must have experience with bridge inspection reporting procedures.
  • Must be able, and willing, to travel on short notice.
  • Must have the physical abilities to traverse steep embankments, work within confined spaces, perform inspections while climbing structures or crossing waterways.
  • Capable of lifting and carrying 25 lbs.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite.
  • Working knowledge of Bentley MicroStation.
  • Actively engages multiple perspectives when solving problems, seeks to learn from peers, and encourages reciprocal learning among team members.

  • Currently approved as an NHI Inspection Team Leader (NJ)
  • Additional NHI coursework (fracture critical, tunnel inspection, ancillary structures, etc.)
