Health Policy Manager (Project Management)
ESSENTIAL ACCOUNTABILITIES:
Health Policy
• Serve as the primary issue lead and internal expert for select AAN issue priorities
• Provide comprehensive assessment of emerging policy issues of interest to neurology and recommended courses of action
• Support the development of AAN legislative policies and positions on select federal and state issues
• Lead the development and maintenance of all advocacy Position Statements
• Draft organization comments and positions in support of policy priorities
• Track and research select legislative policy issues and recommend courses of action
• Draft status reports on AAN advocacy priorities/emerging issues, trends, and analysis of the legislative environment
• Responsible for developing a comprehensive communications strategy in coordination with internal marketing staff to promote advocacy accomplishments to members
• Lead advocacy-related social media posts in coordination with internal marketing staff to educate external stakeholders about AAN policy priorities
• Develop educational resources for policymakers
Collaboration
• Participate in regular dialogue with regulatory advocacy staff to ensure alignment of strategy, priorities, and resources
• Participate in issue advocacy groups and coalitions with voluntary health associations, peer societies, and other stakeholders as needed
• Participate in the internal policy team, which is responsible for the coordination and strategy development of key payment, regulatory, or legislative issues affecting neurology
• Participate in the internal state advocacy policy team; taking the lead on select policy initiatives in assigned states
• Attend policy events as needed
Advocacy Program
• Serve as the staff liaison to the AAN's Health Policy Subcommittee
• Attend committee meetings, advocacy programs and other events as needed
• Maintain regular contact with staff in the AAN's Washington, DC office
QUALIFICATIONS:
Education:
• Bachelor's Degree in Political Science, Public Health, Public Policy, or a related field is required
• Master's Degree is preferred
Experience:
• Minimum of 3 years of experience in work or study of federal health care policy is required
• Experience working on Capitol Hill or with federal legislation is preferred
• Experience implementing social media-based communication strategies is preferred
Additional Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:
• Demonstrated advanced oral and written communication skills are required
• Demonstrated proficiency using Microsoft Office, specifically in Word, Excel, and PowerPoint is required
• Demonstrated ability to establish and maintain collaborative working relationships with all internal and external stakeholders from diverse backgrounds at all levels of the organization is required
• Demonstrated customer service skills sufficient to provide prompt, courteous and accurate information to internal and external customers in person, on the phone and through written and electronic correspondence are required
• Anticipates needed actions; plans and follows through with work activities; dependable and focused on getting things done to achieve goals is required
• Demonstrated ability to be punctual and act professionally is required
• Knowledge of Quorum, or similar government relations software is preferred
• Knowledge of state legislation, regulation, advocacy, grassroots and political affairs is preferred
ADDITIONAL POSITION INFORMATION:
FLSA Classification: Exempt
Travel Requirements: Occasional travel required – approximately 5%
Location: Minneapolis, MN
Schedule: Some evenings and weekends required
