Director, Counseling and Mental Health (Finance)



Department: Counseling & Mental Health Ctr Salary: Commensurate with education and experience.
Description:

The Director, Counseling and Mental Health provides strategic leadership and administrative oversight for the university's Counseling Center, ensuring the delivery of high-quality mental health services to students. This role is responsible for supervising clinical staff, managing daily operations, and developing programs that support student mental health and well-being. The Director collaborates with campus partners to promote a holistic approach to student success and ensure services are inclusive, accessible, and aligned with current best practices. Additionally, the position plays a key role in crisis intervention, staff development, and policy implementation.

Duties:
  • Provides direct oversight and strategic direction for mental health services that address the needs of college students, including the development of counseling programs, crisis response protocols, and student-centered wellness initiatives.
  • Advocates for the mental health needs of students across campus by collaborating with university leadership, participating in policy development, and promoting mental health awareness initiatives. Takes a leadership role in representing the center to other campus units.
  • Ensures counseling staff maintain appropriate licensure and adhere to clinical, ethical, and legal standards through regular supervision, training, and compliance monitoring.
  • Leads and collaborates with UHCL campus departmental leaders, as well as other campus partners to ensure the holistic, including mental wellness of students are recognized and promoted consistently.
  • Responsible for hiring, training, development, supervision, and evaluation of support and professional staff members and student employees. Directs and oversees business process documentation including training documents, policy manuals, establishing and implementing new procedures as needed.
  • Administrative oversight of unit planning, budgeting, and assessments. Supports divisional initiatives to align with the unit's mission, Division of Student Affairs goals, and University priorities. Develops and disseminates reports for the division and university. Develops and maintains comprehensive data tracking systems to monitor and evaluate the success of programs/services.
  • Develops and maintains internal and external partnerships in association with student mental health. Ensures compliance with accreditation requirements associated with the International Association of Counseling Services, Inc.
  • Manages departmental marketing efforts, implementing communication strategies that have campus-wide reach, including website, social media, and all other digital and print marketing materials for the unit.
  • Participates in campus mental health policy formation and program development. Serves on University and divisional level committees and advisory boards that support mental health efforts in developing co-curricular experiences aimed at enhancing the holistic development of students and overall student success. This includes but is not limited to serving on the CARE team.
  • Performs related duties as assigned.

Required Qualifications:
  1. Doctoral degree in Counseling or Clinical Psychology from an accredited school and program.
  2. Minimum six years of experience managing a counseling center on a college campus.
  3. Must be eligible for licensure as a Psychologist in the state of Texas.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:
  • Thorough understanding of college counseling laws and regulations, including FERPA, HIPAA, and ethical standards set by professional counseling organizations.
  • Skills in client profile technological platforms; Microsoft software and other institution based technology.
  • Ability to collaborate and to demonstrate a participative management style.
  • Administrative skills in planning, budgeting and assessment.
  • Outstanding verbal and written communication skills and ability to establish effective relationships with internal and external partners.
  • Excellent interpersonal skills to enhance resources, particularly grant writing.
  • Ability to lead, oversee, supervise the activities of others and to create positive teams.
  • Ability to conduct assessment and research and to communicate data to others.
  • Ability to create and update policies, procedures, mental health protocols and forms.
