The U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) National Cooperative Geologic Mapping Program (NCGMP) characterizes, interprets, and distributes the geologic framework model of the nation through geologic mapping and associated research. The NCGMP's vision is to create an integrated, three-dimensional, digital geologic framework of the United States and its territories to address the nation's rapidly changing natural resource needs. Akima is hiring a Scientist I to support the NCGMP Program Office staff to perform mission-essential Program functions and execute day-to-day tasks required to support all NCGMP Program Components. The individual will be providing administrative and technical support to execute various Program Components, possibly including the Earth Mapping Resources Initiative (Earth MRI), FEDMAP, STATEMAP, EDMAP, the Great Lakes Geologic Mapping Coalition, the National Geologic Map Database (NGMDB), and the US GeoFramework Initiative (USGI). Additionally, the NCGMP requires geographic information system (GIS) and logistical support related to the development of a geodatabase of NCGMP-sponsored mapping, the validation of standard format GIS geodatabase deliverables, and the convening of strategic planning workshops.
Build a geodatabase of Earth MRI and other NCGMP Program Component -Sponsored Recent / Active / Pending / Proposed geologic mapping.
Aid in organizing regional GLR working groups and resource sharing initiatives.
Aid in convening regional GLR coordination workshops to increase collaboration among groups of states and U.S. GeoFramework Initiative (USGI)-FED.
Work with National Geologic Mapping Database-U.S. GeoFramework Initiative (NGMDB-USGI) and National Index of Borehole Information (NIBI) to develop GLR region inventories of all existing relevant geologic data.
Assist in facilitating communication about and within the USGI and within the GLR by identifying all potential stakeholders and developing outreach strategies keyed to application needs parsed by region.
Assist in structuring the FY2023 STATEMAP Program Announcement to expand and prioritize options, with additional new options keyed to regional groups of States.
Knowledge of basic geologic theory and techniques of geologic map making, knowledge of geographic information systems (GIS) techniques for archival and graphical presentation of data, and professional-level abilities to understand, interpret, and evaluate 2D and 3D geologic maps that depict surficial sediments, bedrock, and structure using established conventions.
Skills in typical office software (e.g., for word processing, database use, preparing presentations, designing graphics).
GIS computer skills sufficient to enter and retrieve data from various databases; and to summarize and display data in textual, map, graphical, and tabular forms as would be obtained through a graduate degree in the geological sciences and/or an undergraduate degree with extensive related practical work experience.
General knowledge of program and budget formulation processes sufficient for participation in the articulation of plans, program objectives and justifications, Program Announcement narratives, and economic analyses of organization programs, operations, and activities.
Skills in oral and written communication needed to summarize information and to write status reports, including skills in library research techniques sufficient to locate applicable references.
Professional manner, and ability to work well with other project members and with state geological surveys and other cooperators.
