Fluid Handling Specialist, Electrified Vehicles (Engineering)



Job Description:

The Electrified Vehicle Fluid Handling Specialist drives the development of the next generation of fluid handling products targeted at the growing electric vehicle (EV) powertrain market.   This specialist shapes the direction of our new EV fluid product portfolio though three main areas including: knowledge; strategy, and development.  The specialist “knowledge” should include a thorough understanding of EV system thermal management, advanced EV vehicles, systems/architectures in addition to battery architecture.   The specialist will be required to utilize and disseminate this knowledge to drive the future fluid handling product line “strategy” around the growth of EVs.   The specialist will also be required to help develop new innovative products and bring these innovations to fruition through direct hands-on product development activities.

Primary Responsibilities:

  • Maintain, grow, and disseminate technical knowledge pertaining to EV architecture and battery systems and the influence these have on advanced thermal management and fluid handling systems
  • Identification of future technology and industry trends pertaining to the EV market
  • The development and execution of a concise and salient EV fluid product strategy
  • Generation and maintenance of technical relationships with customers to share information and collect market intelligence and Voice-of-the-Customer (VoC) feedback
  • Develop and foster customer interest/acceptance of our new EV products
  • Lead and support hands-on development of new fluid products targeted at the EV market
  • Creation of applicable specifications and standards that define the performance needs of new products
  • Collaborate with a cross-functional team to design and build robust product and processes, developing, commercializing and sustaining components to meet customer and market needs
  • Influence multi-functional team members to achieve stretch goals
  • Develop and create end-product drawings and specifications accurately defining requirements of design intent development and creation of end-product drawings and specifications accurately defining requirements of design intent
  • Perform CAD studies on new development designs / create prototype and sample tooling
  • Create test plans using OEM requirements and assure all customer specifications and requirements are met utilizing laboratory validation
  • Acquire benchmarking parts and competitor information to assess product landscape
  • Understand Cooper Standard product lines outside of main discipline
  • Provide guidance and mentor team members
  • Solve problems in typical situations; analyzes possible solutions using technical experience and judgment
  • Interface and collaborate with manufacturing operations to improve product quality, cost and safety
  • May be required to perform duties other than those specified in this description

Education and Qualifications:

  • Engineering degree required, M.S. or Ph.D. highly preferred
  • Ten (10) plus years of experience required in electrified powertrains / Electric Vehicles (EV), Battery Systems, or Thermal Management systems. Understanding of in-vehicle systems communication and/ vehicle electronics preferred.
  • Must be self-motivated, highly organized, detail oriented and able to manage projects with minimal supervision, including multiple projects and multi-task situations, with the ability to prioritize, set and achieve goals
  • Ability to explain complex information to others in a conscientious manner
  • Ability to provide solutions to various automotive component issues
  • Ability to perform in a fast-paced working environment
  • Must show the ability to deliver under tight deadlines
  • CAD experience preferred
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills
  • Basic knowledge in production equipment and process design
  • Ability to draft and release engineering standards
  • Determine optimal engineering designs for various process and products
  • Understanding of production needs related to design/development
  • Must be capable of evaluating various processes and selecting those optimal for the product
  • Ability to adapt to various customer environments
  • Proficient in Microsoft Office
  • Willingness and ability to travel, as necessary

Work Environment/Work Conditions:

  • Professional Office Environment / Remote Collaborations
  • Travel to engineering / manufacturing facilities or customer locations when required
  • Use of required personal protection equipment while in labs or on manufacturing floor
  • Equipment used requires proper training on the potential for and avoidance of injury
