Utilities Operator Trainee (Manufacturing)



POSITION TITLE: Utilities Operator Trainee
CLASSIFICATION: Non-Exempt
DEPARTMENT: Utilities
SUPERVISOR: Utilities Supervisor
GRADE: NE6

Position Summary:
Under the direct guidance and training of the Utilities Supervisor for Water/Wastewater Operation & Maintenance, will learn to maintain the operations and maintenance of the Pueblo's water, wastewater and solid waste equipment and systems within the area delegated and guidelines provided by the Santa Ana Tribal Utilities Authority, Tribal Council and Tribal Administration.

Essential Duties & Responsibilities:
· Analyze conditions of the water systems to ensure compliance with all applicable legislation and regulation through the chemistry of water and wastewater process
· Maintains and repairs the utilities water system including installation, expansion and relocation of water distribution, and wastewater and solid waste disposal.
· Coordinate the allocation, regulation and delivery of Tribal Water to users
· Coordinate wastewater and solid waste elimination systems including installing, maintaining, repairing, servicing, enlarging, and relocating such systems.
· Update water reports, records, logs and graphs to confirm adequacy of present and projected water needs.
· Confer with administrative and technical utilities employees and contractors/consultants to ensure effective delivery of water to users and proper disposal of wastewater and solid waste.
· Proper maintenance and grounds keeping of water and wastewater facilities.
· Obtain New Mexico Water and/or Wastewater Level I certifications; agreed upon a completion date of no later than 18 months from date of hire.
· Perform other duties as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications:
High School Diploma or GED. Experienced in heavy equipment, power tool and hand tool operations. Must be able to successfully pass a pre-employment drug/alcohol screen and background investigation including a motor vehicle check. Must possess and maintain a valid New Mexico driver's license and be insurable under the Pueblo's insurance.


Knowledge, Skills, Abilities, and Certifications:
· Skill in using heavy equipment and hand and power tools.
· Heavy equipment operations experience, e.g. backhoe, bobcat, etc.
· Skill in operating various word-processing, spreadsheets, and database software programs in a Windows environment.
· Ability to work extended hours and flexible schedules.
· Ability to exercise independent judgment.
· Ability to interact with construction contractors.
· Ability to interact and maintain good working relationships with individuals of varying social and cultural backgrounds.
· Ability to interpret applicable federal, state, county and local laws, regulations, and requirements.
· Ability to maintain confidentiality.
· Ability to work independently and meet strict timelines.
· Ability to communicate efficiently and effectively both verbally and in writing.

Physical Demands:
While performing the duties of this job, the employee regularly is required to sit; use hands to finger, handle, or feel; reach with hands and arms; and talk or hear. The employee frequently is required to walk. The employee occasionally is required to stand; and stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl. The employee must occasionally lift and/or move up to 50 pounds.

Work Environment:
Work is generally performed in an office or outdoor setting with exposure to dirt, dust, fumes and loud noises. Standing and walking may be on uneven surfaces or unstable ground. Working in sensitive and/or hazardous areas is common. Situations where safety-toe shoes, safety goggles, gloves, or protective face shields are needed may occur. Evening, weekend, and/or holiday work will be required. Incumbent is required to be on call 24 hours during periods of water utilities emergency operations.
