Job Description
POSITION SUMMARY:
This position is responsible for delivering comprehensive counseling services to registry members and donors before, during, and following the donation process. Services include the following: evaluation and assessment, individual and group counseling, information and education, client-centered outcome planning, interventions, referral, and follow-up. Services will be provided over the telephone/online. This position also serves as a resource and reference to internal customers through front-line donor contact and work-up team coaching and training, as well as NMDP staff counseling, as needed. Supports the achievement of department goals through performance of job accountabilities listed below.
ACCOUNTABILITIES:
Donor Counseling Services:
- Provides donor advocacy, to include counseling, education, referral, psychosocial support and/or intervention to those who request or are referred to donor counseling services. Services may be provided both individually and/or in a group setting.
- Addresses the donor presenting need(s) and conducts a brief assessment to determine how the donor is coping with donation related activities and post-donation outcomes.
- Conducts telephone counseling with individuals. Conducts an extensive psychosocial assessment. Develops goals based on the assessment and creates an individualized plan to meet the client's needs.
- Schedules follow-up calls as needed to determine need for more intensive and individualized counseling and information services. Makes referrals to other professionals, as needed, to ensure appropriate and effective treatment is delivered.
- Provides support to donor's family and friends with the goal to reduce stress and anxiety felt by individuals in the donor's support network, thereby reducing the stress and anxiety on the donor him or herself.
Donor Management Support:
- Provides coaching to front-line donor contact staff (Public Response, Donor Contact Team, Work-Up team, Donor Advocacy, etc.) regarding best practices for supporting emotional and psychosocial needs donors present.
- Offers counseling services to NMDP staff as the need arises for debriefing after specific cases or conversations.
- Works in tandem with Medical & Quality Services and Donor Services leaders to develop and deliver in-services and trainings to staff who interact directly with donors, providing the opportunity for greater skill development, resulting in better donor support and more effective conversations and outcomes.
Other Accountabilities:
- Maintains professional affiliations with organizations related to providing counseling, psychosocial support and navigation services to donors, including conferences related to hematopoietic cell transplantation or social work interventions.
- Maintains professional awareness, knowledge and understanding of specific issues that donors may face during their donation journey and post-donation.
- Provides case consultation to other staff members within NMDP.
- Other duties as assigned.
REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS:
Knowledge of:
- The donation process and the unique stressors of this experience on both donors and their family and friends.
- Principles of case management and confidentiality.
- Medical knowledge, preferably in the area of oncology and/or stem cell transplantation;
- Grief and loss assessment and interventions.
Ability to:
- Work with donors who are experiencing stress in their lives as a result of donation.
- Mentor and coach others.
- Influence others to take action.
- Communicate effectively through oral and written means.
- Use basic word-processing and computer functions.
- Problem-solve, mediate and use advanced interpersonal and customer service skills.
- Communicate clearly and effectively over the telephone.
- Provide direct counseling and intervention in a supportive and therapeutic manner.
- Interact with a variety of audiences including donors, family members, employers, educators, and other healthcare professionals.
- Plan and coordinate projects and exhibits.
Education and/or Experience:
- Master's degree in social work plus LICSW clinical licensure
- Three years of experience working directly with clients to provide counseling, case management, assessment, education and navigation.
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS: (Additional qualifications that may make a person even more effective in the role, but are not required for consideration)
- Knowledge of medical and psychosocial aspects of BMT is preferred.
- Knowledge of ethnically diverse and medically underserved populations preferred.
- Fluent in Spanish, both written and oral.
