Maintenance Mechanic I (Maintenance)



As a member of the Plant Operations and Maintenance Team, Mechanics perform preventive and corrective maintenance on building mechanical and electrical equipment and systems at the main hospital building as well as at satellite facilities.   Installs, maintains, troubleshoots and repairs various mechanical systems.  Participates in the hospital preventive maintenance (PM) program.  Minimum of three years of commercial or industrial facility operations and maintenance (O&M) experience.  This is a day shift position that includes an every third weekend work schedule.

Skill Requirements

  • Must be able to read blueprints and other technical documentation.
  • Ability to perform troubleshooting & repairs on a wide variety of facility utility and building infrastructure systems including: air compressors, boilers and door hardware.
  • Basic computer keyboard skills necessary for sending and receiving e-mails and entering work status updates for assigned work orders.
  • Must be able to climb ladders.
  • Physically able to lift up to 60 lbs.
  • Demonstrated skills with operation, maintenance and repair of mechanical equipment and utility system components as well as building structure components such as door hardware, boilers, air compressors and patient beds and stretchers.
  • Installs, maintains, troubleshoots and repairs various mechanical and electrical systems at the main hospital building as well as at satellite buildings located throughout the county.   Typical tasks may include but are not limited to:
  • Completing various service call work orders including but not limited to:
    • Performs door repairs and adjustments that includes: mechanical and electrical door closures, locks and hinges.
    • Cuts new keys from blanks.
    • Performs filter changes in HVAC equipment including: fan coil units, VAV boxes and air handler units.
    • Performs minor carpentry work including but not limited to: hanging pictures on walls, hanging marker boards, hanging sharps boxes, soap and towel dispensers, assemble furniture and perform minor furniture repairs.
    • Move office furniture in support of staff office moves.
    • Performs wallboard repair and touch-up painting.
    • Inspects and repairs handrails.
    • Assists in performing roof repairs.
    • Sink and toilet leak repairs and unclogging toilets.
    • Replaces burned out light bulbs and ballasts.
    • Repairs electrical and mechanical components on beds and stretchers.
    • Repairs steam leaks.
    • Cleans and rebuilds steam condensate traps and strainers.
    • Replaces pumps and pump couplings.
    • Replaces single phase motors.
    • Services and repairs rooftop exhaust fans.  Replaces fan belts and bearings and makes motor fan adjustments as necessary.
    • Repairs medical gas and oxygen leaks.
    • Inspects, repairs and safety checks kitchen equipment.
    • Inspects, repairs and safety checks laundry equipment.
    • Troubleshoots and repairs air compressors and air dryers.
    • Checks pump and motor operation in various areas of the hospital complex.
    • Performs routine cleaning of Plant Operations and Maintenance vehicles as well as performs minor repairs to hospital fleet vehicles including light bulb replacements and windshield wiper replacements.
    • Performs maintenance of sterilizers and water purification equipment.
    • Resets circuit breakers and replaces fuses.
    • Troubleshoots & repairs patient nurse call systems.
    • Performs basic troubleshooting & repair of patient beds and stretchers.
    • Repairs wheeled devices including but not limited to:  wheelchairs, dollies, hand trucks and carts.
    • Troubleshoots and repairs blanket warmers and fluid warmers.
    • Operates and maintains high pressure steam boilers, feed pumps, water purification systems and condensate collection systems.
    • Performs chemical analysis and chemical treatment of boilerwater, feedwater and condensate.
    • Inspects building safety equipment including portable fire extinguishers and exit lights.
    • Monitors the building automation system and fire alarm system from the Plant Operations Control Room.
    • Orders repair parts.
    • Assists other maintenance trades with troubleshooting and repairing various mechanical and electrical systems.
    • Assists Plumbers, and HVAC Technicians on an as needed basis, with troubleshooting & repair of plumbing drains, fixtures, cleaning. gutters and downspouts.
    • Assists Electricians, on an as need basis, with trouble-shooting and performing repairs as well as installation of new service or projects.
    • Assists in other areas of the Plant Operations Department such as: in the Boiler Room cleaning boiler tubes or at the Lifetime Fitness Building Swimming Pool Mechanical Room.
    • As a member of the Hospital maintenance team, provides after hours call-in support on a rotating schedule basis and comes to work after hours in a timely manner to perform equipment break-down repairs.
    • May be required to use hospital vehicles for various reasons (going to supply houses, travel between buildings on the Augusta Health Campus and throughout the county etc.).
    • During the winter months, assists with shoveling snow on sidewalks.
    • Performs other duties as assigned.
