AVP, Pharmacy Operations & Clinical Nutrition (Finance)



Nemours is seeking an Assistant Vice President, Pharmacy Operations & Clinical Nutrition to join our Nemours Children's Health team in Orlando, Florida.

Located in Orlando, Fla., Nemours Children's Hospital is the newest addition to the Nemours integrated healthcare system. Our 130-bed pediatric hospital also features the area's only 24-hour Emergency Department designed just for kids as well as outpatient pediatric clinics including several specialties previously unavailable in the region. In keeping with our goal of bringing Nemours care into the communities we serve, we also provide specialty outpatient care in several clinics located throughout the region.

The Assistant Vice President, Pharmacy Operations & Clinical Nutrition is responsible for developing, implementing, and sustaining pharmacy and clinical nutrition programs. The assistant vice president (AVP) has core accountabilities for the following: (a) safety, quality, and risk; (b) patient and population health advocacy; (c) clinical care delivery and optimal patient outcomes; (d) healthy work environment; (e) strategic, financial, and human resource management; (f) legal and regulatory compliance; (g) networking, partnering, and collaboration; and (h) accountability/advocacy for their Associates.

The AVP, at this level of influence, has line authority over multiple service lines or units that have pharmacists, registered dieticians and technicians working who deliver care in inpatient, hospital outpatient departments, and/or ambulatory care settings. The AVP reports directly to the SVP Chief Nursing and Patient Operations Officer.

The AVP, Pharmacy Operations provides leadership & direction, in partnership with the Medication Safety Officer in assuring the safest possible medication delivery systems. They contribute to the design, implementation, and maintenance of safe, standardized medication systems by working collaboratively with all members of the healthcare team, including our patient's families. They are a primary contributor to a culture of medication safety by advocating for the reduction of errors associated with the medication-use process at Nemours Children's Health, Florida through the continual review & improvement of medication use systems.
  • Supervises and coordinates the activities of the pharmacy operations and clinical nutrition associates to provide optimal pharmaceutical and clinical care support to patients of Nemours Children's Hospital & Health, Florida in an appropriate, efficacious, safe, and cost-effective manner and meets all state and federal regulatory requirements.
  • Collaborates with Nemours department, hospital and health-system clinicians in the design, implementation and updating of clinical pathways and rules
  • Participates in Health Informatics testing for implementation of the designated health record and adjunct systems upgrades, enhancements, and patches, while minimizing impact on department workflow.
  • Oversees current formulary within the electronic health record system as well as medication management systems to include smart infusion pump technology.
  • Coordinates training & education for departmental staff regarding modifications & enhancements to the electronic health record and other adjunct medication management technology systems.
  • Responsible for compliance with The Joint Commission and other accreditation and regulatory standards as they apply to assigned duties & responsibilities. Maintains departmental reports and statistics, reviews department performance, effects change as needed to improve services provided and assures compliance with regulatory requirements.
  • Develops standards of performance, monitors, and supervises assigned pharmacy and nutrition associates. Responsible for the coordination of staff development related to Pharmacy Operations and Clinical Nutrition to include safe medication and nutrition practices. Evaluates performance and initiates or makes recommendations for personnel actions, such as merit increases, promotions, and disciplinary action.
  • Acts as internal consultant to continuously improve the safety of the medication management processes organizationally in Florida and within the Nemours Health System.
  • Serves as a resource for clinical departments/disciplines for medication safety issues
  • In response to an event or identified trend, acts as an organizational resource to conduct assessments of the safety of the medication management process
  • Assist in efforts to ensure compliance with the Joint Commission, FDA, USP, CMS, DEA, OSHA, HRSA, Florida Board of Pharmacy and Department of Health for regulatory standards and is responsible to other relevant standard setting agencies as they relate to safe medication management or clinical nutrition practices
  • Coordinates with the Medication Safety Officer to establish and maintain medication safety practices to assure they are implemented across the organization and health system
  • Advises the Medication Safety Committee in collaboration with the Medication Safety Officer (MSO), Medical Executive, Pharmacy and Therapeutics Committees and serves on committees that direct pharmacy and nutrition practices organizationally.
  • Advises on training activities to support safe medication management at NCHFL and within Nemours Health.
  • Educate practice leaders and clinical staff to promote safe medication and clinical nutrition practices
  • Ensures that patients and caregivers are included in the medication safety process as active and equal partners
  • All other responsibilities as assigned.

  • Job Requirements
    • BS Pharm or PharmD (required), MBA or ASHP Accredited Hospital Residency preferred.
    • Minimum of 5 years experience working across departments & with organizational leadership to achieve action-oriented results and financial stewardship required.
    • 2 years of progressive experience at a director's level or above or other equivalent leadership experience preferred.
    • Active Florida Pharmacist License - In Good Standing required.
    • Florida Consultant Pharmacist License required within the first 6 months after starting employment on-site. May be required to serve as the Consultant Pharmacist of Record for the NCHFL hospital Class III Pharmacy Permit.
    • Demonstrated ability to identify issues, define problems, facilitate teams and measure for success & sustainability.
    • Experience with formal process improvement programming (i.e. Lean/Six Sigma Experience) preferred.
    • Extensive knowledge of drug products, medical therapeutics, and disease states.
    • Ability to work with information systems, automated and technical equipment.
    • Knowledge of Improvement, Change Management, Quality & Safety Principles for Healthcare preferred.
    • Medication safety management experience preferred.
