Associate I, SVB Startup Banking (Finance)
When you work with the world's most innovative companies, you know you're making a difference.
Our clients are the game changers, leaders and investors who fuel the global innovation economy. They're the businesses behind the next medical breakthroughs. And the visionaries whose new technologies could transform the way people live and work.
They come to SVB for our expertise, deep network and nearly forty years of experience in the industries we serve, and to partner with diverse teams of passionate, enterprising SVBers, dedicated to an inclusive approach to helping them grow and succeed at every stage of their business.
Join us at SVB and be part of bringing our clients' world-changing ideas to life. At SVB, we have the opportunity to grow and collectively make an impact by supporting the innovative clients and communities SVB serves. We pride ourselves in having both a diverse client roster and an equally diverse and inclusive organization. And we work diligently to encourage all with different ways of thinking, different ways of working, and especially those traditionally underrepresented in technology and financial services, to apply.
Job Description
For 35 years, SVB has helped innovators and their investors move bold ideas forward fast. Today, we provide a range of banking services to companies of all sizes in innovation centers around the world. We are proud that the majority of funds and venture-backed companies globally are clients of SVB.
SVB Startup Banking - Portfolio Management - Associate
SVB Startup Banking is focused on engaging and building deep and authentic relationships with early-stage founders, investors, and ecosystem partners to improve their probability of success. Early-stage constituencies include accelerators and incubators, law firms, universities, and industry groups, along with seed and early-stage VC investors. This role supports VPs, Directors and Managing Directors and involves collaborating with cross-functional teams representing commercial banking, credit cards, letters of credit, foreign exchange, treasury management and private banking, with the goal of orchestrating a superior client experience and maximizing support of client relationships.
Much of the work will be in collaboration with VPs and Directors. The candidate should have strong task management, prioritization and project management skills, and the ability to work independently and have the availability to attend networking and evening events occasionally. A successful candidate will engage in staying up to date on life science technology market and sector trends.
Strong written and communication skills are essential. The candidate should approach each client engagement, electronic or live, as an opportunity to advise clients and to improve their business standing through that advice. The Associate will engage in client meetings both with call preparation and in taking notes. We strive to establish ourselves as trusted advisors more than 'bankers', and the candidate will engage and build relationships with key client stakeholders to remain well-informed and able to respond to changing circumstances while appropriately balancing client and SVB needs.
Internally, a self-aware approach to engaging with the team, showing respect, follow-up and curiosity towards learning is desired. A self-driven desire to seek out bank-provided tools and relationships internally and externally will help the candidate succeed.
Strong interest in the life science industry and desire to understand market dynamics, trends and investor relationships (biopharma, digital health, medical devices and diagnostics)
Strong communication skills, both written and verbal
Attention to detail, analytical and comfortable making data-informed decisions
Strong focus and ownership of the overall client experience
Ability to manage time and prioritize
Able to work in a team environment, but comfortable working independently
Knowledge of banking products and operations
2+ years of related experience
Bachelor's degree in Life Science is preferred though not required
