Lab Assistant I (Engineering)

Position Summary

The Lab Assistant I receives, retrieves, and processes specimens for in-house and reference laboratory analysis including electronically checking specimens into the LIS system and reviewing orders for errors. Records temperatures and performs other maintenance as required on analyzers. Performs a variety of waived tests. Performs a variety of specimen collection techniques including but not limited to venipuncture and nasopharyngeal swabs from patients for laboratory procedures used in the diagnosis and treatment of disease.

Essential Job Functions/Accountabilities

Receives, retrieves, and processes specimens for in-house and reference laboratory analysis including electronically checking specimens into the LIS system and reviewing orders for errors.

Maintains laboratory records, comply with correct procedures, policies, and health and safety regulations, undertake basic administrative tasks such as filing and answering telephones appropriately.

Performs some waived testing and maintenance on analyzers including temperature monitoring, cleaning and disinfecting, disposal of expired specimens. Assists medical technicians/technologists.

Perform a variety of routine blood drawing procedures to include venipuncture techniques and urine collection using standard equipment to include vacutainer tubes and sleeves, tourniquets, syringes and butterfly needles.

Confer with patient to obtain information for laboratory records, explain procedures, allay fears and elicit cooperation.

Utilize standard procedures for the maintenance of positive patient identification; record appropriate collection information on proper requisitions.

Position Requirements

Education: Phlebotomy Certification Program and or Medical Assistant Program completion.

Experience: Minimum of 1 year experience as a laboratory assistant preferred.
