Associate Director, Pharmacology & Biomarkers (Education)
Primary duties/responsibilities:
Plans, initiates, directs and executes scientific research and experiments and interprets and communicates results as part of multi-disciplinary team(s) results. This includes, but may not be limited to, experiments in rodents including pharmacokinetic (PK) studies, xenograft studies, and non-GLP safety studies.
Develop, validate and implement innovative cellular and soluble biomarker assays with focus on use of assays for preclinical studies through to clinical studies and where relevant, a Regulatory strategy.
Develop in-house and oversee execution of the ex vivo analysis of samples to measure mRNA and protein levels from preclinical studies. Understanding of biomarkers and linking a biomarker to a functional outcome in an animal model.
Manage a core group of scientists to run qPCR, RT-qPCR, and immunoassays, manage genotyping for multiple rodent colonies.
Independently place, set up, implement and monitor “fit for purpose” or Regulated biomarker assays at external service providers (ESP)/Contract research organizations (CRO) in one or several biomarker modalities (qPCR, RT-qPCR, IHC, immunoassays for protein, ex vivo cell analysis); identify, escalate, or resolve complex assay troubleshooting, sample management or CRO issues.
Investigates the feasibility of applying a wide variety of scientific principles and concepts to research problems.
Develops and writes protocols, study reports and IND documents as appropriate.
Supervises the activities of other personnel or assumes the role of project leader to lead a team on a special project(s).
Maintains a detailed laboratory notebook.
Maintains appropriate knowledge of state-of-the-art principles and theories and identifies new project areas or technologies.
Abides by all IACUC requirements when working with animals.
Abides by all safety requirements.
Contributes to general lab needs such as:
Equipment maintenance.
Capital equipment purchases.
Performs other tasks as assigned
KNOWLEDGE/SKILLS/ABILITIES REQUIRED
* Minimum level of education and years of relevant work experience.
PhD degree in a scientific discipline and a minimum of 10 years of combined experience with progressively increasing responsibilities in a pharmaceutical, biotechnology or related environment.
* Special knowledge or skills needed and/or licenses or certificates required.
Experience handling mice and rats. This includes, but may not be limited to, dosing, blood collection and minor surgery.
Experience in biomarker assay development.
Experience in qPCR, RT-qPCR, immunoassays for protein and ex vivo cell analysis.
Proven scientific writing skills.
Demonstrated ability to work effectively in a multi-disciplinary team environment.
Attention to detail.
Excellent planning, organization and time management skills including the ability to support and prioritize multiple projects.
Demonstrated ability to write scientific documents and reports.
Excellent verbal and written communication and skills.
Ability to work independently and collaboratively, as required, in a fast-paced, matrixed, team environment consisting of internal and external team members.
Analytical thinker with excellent problem-solving skills and the ability to adapt to changing priorities and deadlines.

Pharmacology expertise in neurobiology, oncology, pharmacokinetics, pharmacodynamics, translational biology, or toxicology.

Lab and Office-based position, Travel between PTC sites in South Plainfield and Bridgewater may be required.
