GEAR UP Program Advisor Part Time (Manufacturing)
Under general supervision of the GEAR UP Program Director, the GEAR UP Program Advisor develops early outreach programs designed to increase the number of college eligible and college bound students from educationally and economically disadvantage backgrounds and provides academic enrichment opportunities for targeted middle and high school students.? GEAR UP (Gaining Early Awareness and Readiness for Undergraduate Programs) works in partnership with administrators, teachers, students, and families in target elementary, middle, and high schools in regional K-12 school districts.? The goal is to increase the number of students from historically low college enrollment communities who engage in post-secondary preparation with an emphasis on college/university preparation by providing comprehensive mentoring, outreach, and support services including a) providing information regarding financial aid for postsecondary education for participating students; b) encouraging student enrollment in rigorous or challenging curricula and coursework, in order to reduce the need for remedial coursework at the postsecondary level; c) increasing the number of participating students who obtain a secondary school diploma and complete applications for, and enroll in, a program of postsecondary education.? The GEAR UP Program's central office is located in Redding collaborating with educators and students at junior and senior high schools in Shasta, Tehama and Trinity counties.? This 7-year grant serves 2 cohorts of students beginning in 6th and 7th grade and follows them through their first year in college.
The GEAR UP Advisor works on site at one to three schools offering services that may include tutoring in core subjects, mentoring, career awareness workshops and counseling, financial aid workshops and counseling, campus tours, after-school activities, college-admissions workshops and counseling. Other responsibilities include collecting/inputting/managing data in the GEAR UP database, college trip planning and supervision, and other duties as deemed appropriate by the GEAR UP director.

Qualifications:
Must maintain valid CA driver's license.
Bachelor's Degree required, with a minimum of two years' experience in a related field preferred.
Prior experience with federal TRiO or GEAR UP programs preferred.
Experience in developing and managing student, youth, or academic preparation programs including teaching/instructing, advising, tutoring, mentoring, or youth development serving large numbers of ethnically,
linguistically, and/or economically diverse junior or high school students and sensitivity to the academic, social, and emotional factors confronting them.
Willingness for Professional Development in job-related areas like college admissions, financial aid, STEM, leadership, data-driven decisions, and seminars on serving under-resourced students.
Communication skills to prepare and deliver oral presentations and to prepare written reports, correspondence, proposals, program assessments, email and other materials for a variety of audiences, ensuring compliance with departmental and university guidelines, practices and principles.
Interpersonal skills to interact with individuals of varying backgrounds to establish and maintain collaborative relationships.
Initiative and ability to work independently.

Able to travel by car, bus, training and airplane all day, single night, multiple nights, up to week-long for college-campus visits and professional development opportunities.
Knowledge of Christian and Secular Higher Education admissions and financial aid policies and procedures and experience communicating them to a broad audience
Knowledge of both public schools (K-12) and the California systems of higher education (CCC, CSU, UC, and AICCU), which includes knowledge of academic standards, administrative structure, faculty relations, school protocol, school communities, categorical funding, and the Master Plan of Education in California.
Ability to use and/or learn to use various technology tools and common computer applications such as Word, Excel, Outlook, and social media platforms.
Knowledge of Family Education Rights and Privacy Act (FERPA) and ability to handle and work with confidential records and materials of minors.
Ability to represent Simpson University well in a variety of professional settings.
Essential Functions:
Assess and identify the needs of the student population at target school(s) served, and work with school administrators, counselors, and teachers to determine the best method of providing services.
Design, plan, and implement programs directed towards 6th - 12th grade students (6th & 7th grade in the 2024-25 school year).
Cultivate and maintain a broad range of working relationships with students, families, school staff, administrators, and community organizations; serve as chief program liaison with contact personnel at target schools.
Work with participants to increase awareness of educational opportunities and personal strengths and challenges.
Plan, organize, and implement presentations to students and families at target schools.
Monitor participants' academic progress and motivation needed for admission into college.
Provide academic and career counseling, ensuring enrollment in the correct college preparatory course work in high school.
Provide information regarding college admissions, financial aid, and career options; advise graduating seniors individually with the college application process.
Serve as a resource person and refer participants to other appropriate services or offices for assistance, support, and guidance.
Interpret federal regulations and program policies to participants, parents, and staff at target schools.
Collect and input program data for annual performance report.
Document participant services and contacts and maintain records and files in the GEAR UP database.
Plan, organize and implement campus visits.
Represent Simpson University at regional college fairs, workshops, meetings, and conferences.
Related Responsibilities:
Serve on various committees and advisory groups to set policy, strategy, and direction for programs to improve opportunities for students served.
Coordinate summer programs in conjunction with other outreach programs and campus departments.
Collaborate with other federal, state, community educational access and financial service programs.
Ability to deliver all the above expectations, functions, and responsibilities via a virtual/remote platform if required.
