Medical Assistant- MFA Atwater (Biotech)
Prepare patients for examination by taking vitals, chief complaint, etc.
Obtain medical histories and update Electronic Health Record
Order labs, immunizations, diagnostic studies, etc. per protocol
Explain treatment procedures to patients
Assist the provider during exams and surgical procedures
Collect and prepare lab specimens
Perform basic lab tests, EKGs, treadmills, etc.
Administer injections and immunization as directed
Keep exam rooms stocked with adequate medical supplies, maintain instruments, prepare sterilization as required
Administrative Duties:
Follow Athena clinical workflows for patient intake including quality management
Perform referrals and obtain insurance authorizations
Communicate with patients via telephone and electronic media
Take telephone messages and review patient cases with provider to give feedback and answers to patients
Ensure all related reports, labs and information is available in the patient's medical record prior to their examination
Schedule clinic appointments and maintain surgery schedules
Make arrangements for hospital admissions
Deliver patient instruction under the direction of the medical provider
Maintain supplies and monitor inventory
Communicate with pharmacies regarding prescription orders and refills
Maintain operations of medical equipment, follow operating instructions, call for repairs as needed
Maintain all logs and required checks (i.e. refrigerator temperatures, emergency medications, expired medications, oxygen, cold sterilization fluid, etc.)

QUALIFICATIONS/SKILLS:
High school diploma or GED, Medical Assistant certification, CPR certification recommended but not required.
Medical terminology
Knowledge of the referral system, including using ICD-10 codes and CPT codes
Strong organizational and interpersonal skills
Knowledge of medications and injection procedures
Must possess basic computer knowledge and skills
Must be able to recognize and respond appropriately to urgent/emergent situations per protocols
Effectively cope with typical job stress
PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:
Hearing: Adequate to perform job duties in person and over the telephone. Must be able to use stethoscope and respond to verbal questions.
Speaking: Must be able to communicate clearly to patients in person and over the telephone.
Vision: Visual acuity adequate to perform job duties, including visual examination of patient and reading information from printed sources and computer screens.
Other: Requires frequent lifting and carrying items weighing up to 30 pounds unassisted, including assisting patients when required. Requires adequate physical ability including sufficient manual dexterity to perform the requisite health care service, including injections. Requires frequent bending, reaching, repetitive hand movements, standing, walking, squatting and sitting, with some heavy lifting, pushing and pulling exerted regularly throughout a regular work shift. Requires exposure to communicable diseases, bodily fluids, medicinal preparations and other conditions common to a clinic environment.
WORK ENVIRONMENT:
Normal medical office environment. Occasional evening or weekend work, hours are based on clinic needs.
