Introduction to AM General

AM General develops and builds specialized ground vehicle systems that get the US Armed Services and our allies to and from their mission safely.  Our innovative spirit delivers advanced, rugged, resilient, and dependable mobility solutions.

Site Location – Technology & Engineering Center (TEC).

AM General's TEC facility provides a full range of engineering and support services for vehicle and platform development and sustainment including a full-service workshop for prototype and small-scale production.

KNOWLEDGE and SKILLS:

  • Bachelor's or equivalent design experience.
  • Min. 5 years' experience in 3D CAD modeling and packaging of wheeled vehicles and their systems, minimum 10 years overall design experience required (CREO and/or NX).
  • Knowledge of GD&T per ASME Y14.5-2009 or newer
  • Ability to guide designers in proper application of GD&T
  • Ability to check and correct work submitted by designers.
  • Ability to make drawing changes in the 2D CAD drawing environment.
  • Familiarity with old revisions of ASME Y14.5
  • Strong understanding of descriptive geometry with ability to instruct and correct work submitted by designers.
  • Familiar with generating component and assembly tolerance stack-ups using tolerance stack sheets.
  • Formally trained in applying GD&T and tolerance stack-ups or relevant work experience
  • Ability to interrogate CAD designs with respect to the following: verify proper design clearances, perform interference checks utilizing CAD functionality, verify design best practices were followed, verify military standards are adhered to
  • Broad understanding of vehicle design (sheet metal stampings, weldments, castings, forgings, plastic injection molding, vacuum forming, hose forming, tube & pipe bending, electrical harness design)
  • Must be a great communicator, very detail oriented, and work well with others.
  • Comfortable participating in cross functional design reviews
  • Working knowledge of PDM/PLM systems, Teamcenter, Windchill, SAP.
  • Working knowledge of military specifications and standards, MIL-STD-31000, MIL-STD-1472, MIL-STD-1366, etc.
  • Basic skills with Microsoft Office software

PRINCIPLE DUTIES and RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Responsible for checking designs and following them throughout their lifecycle (prototype, production release, change management)
  • Check drawing packages for correctness and completeness and generate PDF markups documenting mistakes found and dimensional improvements.
  • Checker will often make 2D drawing changes to expedite the release process.
  • Verify all drawing and model content meet program requirements.
  • Verify 3D CAD designs are interference free, have proper clearances, follow best design practices, are manufacturable and are optimized for weight and cost.
  • Will assist in generating best practice documentation for designers and engineers to use as a guide to reduce common mistakes and re-work.
  • Complete checking metric documents as required per customer requirements.
  • Will be the final reviewer of drawing packages that are delivered to the government. Strict adherence to government standards and attention to detail is a must.
  • Provide dimensional expertise in meetings and design reviews.
  • Perform tolerance stack-ups relating to form/fit/function, utilizing results to improve designs, reduce potential for bad parts, and resolve build issues.
  • Ability to work effectively in a team environment with various stakeholders by regularly communicating project status, design issues, and path forward.

PHYSICAL EFFORT 

  • Sight: must be able to regularly read computer screen, reports, and various documents with detail and clarity so as to accomplish work tasks in a safe and efficient manner. This includes regular use of adequate close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, and ability to adjust focus.
  • Hearing: must be able to regularly hear well enough to communicate.
  • Hand-Eye Coordination: must be able to regularly coordinate one's eyes with one's fingers, wrists, or arms to move, carry, or manipulate objects or to perform other job-related tasks.
  • Manual Dexterity: must be able to regularly make quick, accurate, skillful, and coordinated movement with hands and arms to grasp, place, move, or use objects such as phone, computer, and other office equipment, tools, or controls.
  • Agility: must be able to regularly bend, stretch, twist, or reach out with the body, arms, or legs to perform job tasks. This includes the ability to move throughout all areas of the facility, Company's property surrounding facility, or additional work areas.   
  • Climbing / Kneeling: must be able to occasionally climb, kneel, bend over, stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl, with balance.
  • Lifting: must be able to occasionally lift up to 25 pounds with or without assistance.
  • Physical Strength: must be able to occasionally lift, push, pull, or carry objects using hands, arms, back, abdominal muscles, shoulders, legs, or a combination of these muscle groups.
  • Stamina: must be able to occasionally exert oneself physically over long periods of time. This may include performing repetitive or strenuous tasks as well as standing and sitting for long periods.

WORKING CONDITIONS

  • Physical Location:  This position operates between an office and manufacturing plant environment and is often assigned to a specific shift or hours. Employee must be able to perform job functions in environment with varying difficult work conditions such as extreme cold, heat, inclement weather, at heights, and/or while exposed to constant/intermittent loud noises.   
  • Teamwork: This position will work with others to ensure efficiency in the workplace.
  • Listening Skills:  This position will need to understand how to use machinery properly and safely to prevent accidents and ensure all tasks are completed accurately.
  • Ability to follow instructions:  Managers assign tasks and responsibilities, which vary depending on the products being manufactured; this position should be able to follow instructions competently.
  • Methodical approach:  Production lines follow a set process, so this position needs a methodical approach to ensure all tasks are completed in the correct order for a smooth-running production line.
  • Concentration:  This position may perform the same or similar tasks repeatedly, so a strong level of concentration when carrying out these tasks is important for quality control purposes. This role is often fast paced, so being able to maintain focus at all times is important.

Travel Requirements:

   Occasional Travel will be required.
