LMS Admin/Instructional Designer I (Finance)



PRIMARY FUNCTION:

The Instructional Designer is responsible for creating engaging, effective, and learner-centered instructional materials for various delivery modalities, including e-learning, instructor-led training (ILT), virtual instructor-led training (vILT), and blended learning solutions. Administers a LMS through regular administrative tasks, including user support to resolve issues, enhance functionality, and deploy new features. Strong knowledge/ background in instructional design theory and practice, a working knowledge of learning technologies, and a passion for improving learning outcomes. Level I work is closely managed and will work on projects of limited complexity and/or in a support role.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES:

Curriculum Design & Development

  • Design and develop instructional materials, including lesson plans, eLearning modules, instructor guides, assessments, and job aids.
  • Apply instructional design models (e.g., ADDIE, SAM) to create learner-centered experiences.
  • Analyze learning needs through collaboration with subject matter experts (SMEs), stakeholders, and end users.
  • Design and develop instructional materials including storyboards, course outlines, facilitator guides, participant workbooks, job aids, and multimedia content.
  • Build and deploy e-learning modules using tools like Articulate Storyline, Rise, or Adobe Captivate.
  • Ensure training content aligns with Caterpillar standards, industry certifications, and Gregory Poole's operational needs.
  • Assist in creating and updating Technician Career Guides

Collaboration with SMEs

  • Partner with technical experts and instructors to translate complex content into accessible, engaging learning materials.
  • Facilitate content reviews and revisions to ensure accuracy and alignment with learning objectives.
  • Confer with management, external customers, and staff, to determine Operator and Technical training needs.

Learning Technology Integration

  • Develop SCORM/xAPI-compliant content for integration into the Learning Management System (LMS).
  • Leverage tools such as Articulate Storyline, Rise, Camtasia, or Adobe Creative Suite to build interactive content.

System Administration

  • Configure and maintain an LMS platform (e.g., Canvas, Moodle, Blackboard, or similar).
  • Manage user accounts, roles, permissions, and enrollments, and updates.
  • Provide Tier 1 and Tier 2 support to users, resolving technical issues promptly.
  • Serve as the liaison with the CAT Learning Systems Support Team.
  • Ensure system uptime, data integrity, and security compliance.

Evaluation & Continuous Improvement

  • Conduct needs assessments and learner analysis to inform design decisions.
  • Use feedback and data to evaluate course effectiveness and recommend improvements.
  • Ensure alignment of learning objectives with business goals and performance outcomes.
  • Evaluate and revise learning materials based on learner feedback, business impact, and evolving needs.
  • Leverage learning management systems (LMS) to assign, track, and report on training.
  • Administer reports and data with Technician Career Guides.
  • Assign and manage current Technician Levels. Maintain accurate technician training records.

Project Management
  • Manage multiple instructional design projects simultaneously, ensuring timely delivery, cost control and quality standards.
  • Maintain documentation and version control for all learning assets.

MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS:

Education:

  • Bachelor's degree in Instructional Design, Education, Learning Technologies, or a related field.

Work Experience :

  • 0-2 years of experience in instructional design, preferably in technical or workforce development settings.
  • Proficiency with eLearning authoring tools (e.g., Articulate 360, Captivate, Camtasia).
  • Strong writing, editing, and visual communication skills.
  • Knowledge of adult learning theory, instructional design best practices, and accessibility standards.

Physical:

  • Have the ability to occasionally lift up to 25 lbs. of materials.

Other:

  • Experience designing for skilled trades or technical training environments.
  • Strong knowledge/ background in instructional design theory and practice, a working knowledge of learning technologies, and a passion for improving learning outcomes
  • Familiarity with video production and editing tools.
  • Ability to travel occasionally to manage stakeholder relationships, perform needs analysis and facilitate collaborative design sessions.
