PhD Scientist, Biology (RNA Biology) (Biotech)
The incumbent works cross-functionally with internal departments, and external resources as appropriate, as part of PTC's discovery science project teams. The Scientist , Biology supports adherence to relevant regulatory requirements and company Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) as appropriate.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS
Primary duties/responsibilities:
With guidance from the advisor plans, initiates, directs, and executes scientific research and experiments and interprets and communicates results as part of multi-disciplinary team(s). This includes performing analyses of primary research literature.
Presents findings internally to cross-functional teams.
Maintains a detailed laboratory notebook.
Interviews and contributes to the evaluation of candidates.
May provide scientific advice to research leadership on projects and areas of expertise.
May Participate in the development and writing of patent applications
Abides by all safety and regulatory requirements and guidelines.
Performs other tasks as assigned
Contributes to general lab needs such as:
Equipment maintenance
Capital equipment purchases
Troubleshoot
KNOWLEDGE/SKILLS/ABILITIES REQUIRED
* Minimum level of education and years of relevant work experience.
Ph.D. in scientific discipline preferably in Molecular Biology or Biochemistry with 1-2 years' post-doctoral or Industry experience
* Special knowledge or skills needed and/or licenses or certificates required.
Hands on experience with eukaryotic cell culture.
Hands on experience with nucleic acid isolation and quantification, as well as protein quantification and analysis methods (e.g., RT-qPCR, Western blot, ELISA, MSD).
Demonstrated knowledge and understanding of RNA biogenesis, regulation, and turnover and its role in eukaryotic gene expression, with at least one first author publication (e.g., pre-mRNA splicing, polyadenylation, riboswitches, miRNA, NMD, etc.).
Demonstrate ability to work on complex problems to produce experimental data across one or more projects.
Exercises independent judgement within defined procedures and practices.
Demonstrates technical proficiency, collaboration with others within a fast-paced, matrixed, team environment consisting of internal and external team members.
Possesses detailed and expert knowledge of scientific principles and concepts.
Demonstrate ability to work effectively in a multi-disciplinary team environment.
Proficiency with Microsoft Office preferably MS Excel and MS PowerPoint or similar.
Excellent verbal and written communication and skills.
Analytical thinker with excellent problem-solving skills.
Demonstrates an understanding of the strategic alignment of his/her work with corporate goal(s) and demonstrates the ability to adapt to changing priorities and deadlines.
Excellent planning, organization and time management skills including the ability to support and prioritize multiple projects.
*Special knowledge or skills and/or licenses or certificates preferred.
Experience in designing and conducting cell-based studies of compound activity as well as mechanism of action studies (e.g., for pre-mRNA splicing).
Experience in tissue processing and familiarity with animal studies.
Experience in gene therapy and AAV biology.
Experience in analyzing and interpreting RNA seq data.
Experience in working with iPSC and flow cytometry.
