DESCRIPTION

As an integral component of our Architecture/Engineering Practice, Michael Baker International seeks a talented, enthusiastic, and motivated Interior Designer to be part of our team in Virginia Beach, VA. Responsibilities will include design and documentation for ongoing and future Department of Defense (DoD) projects, with the potential for market-driven diversification into other sectors. You will work in multi-discipline, collaborative design teams with architects, landscape architects, and building systems engineers, both in the Virginia Beach office and from other Michael Baker locations. The successful candidate is a responsible and accountable professional and will have creative solution-finding, organizational, and time-management skills, a track record of producing projects on time and on budget, solid working knowledge of all A/E disciplines' roles in a project, high standards for quality and performance, and thorough understanding of design and construction processes. Duties and responsibilities may include, but are not necessarily limited to:

  • Lead in developing the CID (SID and FF&E) packages for DoD clients. Develop preliminary indicative CID including FF&E cost estimates and BVD packages, in coordination with the Architect and Client. Review and coordinate the CID during the design process, including collaboration and reviews with other design team members and clients. Provide final CID design documentation with sufficient detail to facilitate purchase, phasing, and installation of CID, including specifications and samples.
  • Responsible for interior design and detailing for new and renovation DoD projects, which include but are not limited to administrative, industrial, barracks/housing, dining/commercial kitchen, and training facilities.
  • Perform activities and product documentation associated with design, construction, and contract documents, including products and systems research, code analysis, studies, field documentation, reports, sketches, drawings, specificiations, design analysis, and FF&E BVD document preparation.
  • Administer procurement phase and construction phase activities, including: review bids/proposals, review construction submittals, answer Requests for Information, review pay applications, and conduct periodic on-site observation of projects under construction
  • Travel occasionally, as required for project meetings and on-sit work.

PROFESSIONAL REQUIREMENTS
  • BA Interior Design
  • Minimum of 3 years of experience with design and documentation on DoD projects. This experience must include verifiable role as either lead or a primary interior designer on the project. Additional experience with different types of projects is a plus.
  • National Council for Interior Design Qualification Certified is preferred. Eligible to pursue and pursuing certification is required.
  • Legally authorized to work in the U.S., with no restrictions preventing access to a Government installation.
  • Excellent English language skills, both written and verbal
  • Technical writing proficiency. Marketing writing skills are a plus
  • Proficient- to expert-level skills in Building Information Modeling (BIM) (Autodesk Revit)/ AutoCAD, and Microsoft Office Suite
  • Graphics/rendering software (Sketchup, Adobe, 3D Max, Maya, Rhino, etc.) experience highly preferred
