Med/Legal Subrogation Specialist (Legal)



Med/Legal & Work Comp Subrogation Specialist
Department: Revenue Cycle
Reports To: Billing Supervisor
FLSA Status: Non-Exempt/Hourly
Location: Hybrid/Bloomington Location

Position Summary
The Med/Legal & Work Comp Subrogation Specialist is responsible for identifying, investigating, and pursuing third-party liability and workers compensation claims where a medical provider may be entitled to reimbursement for services rendered due to an accident, injury, or workplace incident. This role requires strong communication with insurance companies, attorneys, employers, patients, providers, and internal billing teams to ensure timely and accurate recovery of medical expenses related to motor vehicle accidents (MVAs), personal injury, and work-related injuries.

Key Responsibilities
Case Identification & Intake
Review patient accounts and encounter data to identify potential third-party liability or workers compensation cases.Flag and document relevant subrogation information in the patient record or billing system.Identify and collect appropriate Med/Legal and Work Comp fees from third parties, insurance carriers, or legal representatives.Schedule patients for services at Noran Neurology.
Verification & Investigation
Verify accident- or injury-related details via intake forms, police reports, employer reports, or patient interviews.Confirm third-party liability and coordinate with insurance carriers (auto, liability, workers compensation).Investigate and validate workers compensation coverage and employer responsibility.
Subrogation & Recovery
Submit appropriate claims to responsible third parties, workers compensation carriers, or legal representatives.Monitor and follow up on pending subrogation and work comp cases to ensure timely resolution.Coordinate lien filings, letters of protection, or workers compensation documentation when necessary.
Communication & Documentation
Serve as a liaison between providers, patients, attorneys, employers, and insurance carriers.Document all correspondence and actions taken in billing and legal systems.Respond to inquiries related to balances, case status, or documentation requests.
Compliance & Legal Coordination
Maintain knowledge of state and federal subrogation and workers compensation laws and regulations.Work closely with internal legal counsel to enforce rights of recovery.Ensure HIPAA and confidentiality compliance during all communications and record handling.

Qualifications
Education & Experience
High school diploma or equivalent required; associate or bachelors degree preferred.2+ years of experience in medical billing, legal collections, subrogation, or workers compensation preferred.Experience with liability, PIP, med-pay, or work comp billing required.
Skills
Strong attention to detail and investigative skills.Excellent written and verbal communication.Familiarity with EHR/billing systems (e.g., Epic, Athena, or equivalent).Ability to interpret insurance policies, legal documents, workers compensation claims, and medical billing data.Ability to identify and implement Med/Legal and Work Comp process efficiencies.
