Formula and Human Milk Tech - PT/Days (8hr) - Long Beach (Finance)

Position Summary
The Formula and Human Milk Technician is responsible for the safe receipt, storage, preparation and delivery of human milk and specialized enteral formulas as ordered in the electronic medical record (EMR). The Formula and Human Milk Technician adheres to preparation techniques in accordance with all sanitation regulations and standards established by regulating agencies and the medical center, including all policies and procedures. The Technician will regularly interact with the Supervisor, Clinical Nutrition Programs, Director of Clinical Nutrition, Registered Dietitians, and Registered Nurses. They may also interact with pharmacists, physicians, unit secretaries, and parents/caregivers.
Essential Functions and Responsibilities of the Job
Safely and accurately prepares and delivers human milk and enteral formulas: verifies and reconciles orders using computer systems, ensures proper product labeling, utilizes standardized recipes, accurately measures powders and liquids, adheres to quality control standards and procedures.
Inventories and maintains sufficient stock. Receives, inspects and tracks human milk and enteral formulas.
Prepares and maintains multiple logs.
Maintains sanitation in the preparation area including: follows aseptic technique, follows department and infection control policies, maintains daily appearance and personal hygiene.
Utilizes the chain of command to communicate problems with orders, storage, equipment, or product administration. Contacts the Registered Dietitian or ordering clinician when a standardized recipe is not available.
Participates in the training of newly hired Technicians. Precepts students as assigned.
Participates in Performance Improvement and LEAN projects including data collection.
The Milk Lab operates 365 days a year and is only closed from 11:30pm to 5am daily. All techs are required to be available to work a variety of shifts, weekends and holidays.
This position also requires that techs be able to work in a very fast-paced environment.
All members of the team should be able to comfortably :
Stand for up to 2 hours at a time, sometimes more if the census is higher than usual.
Walk across the hospital several times per day, at a fast pace.
Push carts carrying up to 40 tube feeding bags and several oral supplements at a time.
Lift, carry, move and organize boxes weighing up to 25lbs.
Minimum Requirements
Qualifications/Work Experience:
Experience in Formula Room setting preferred.
Able to understand and perform algebra.
Able to work independently.
Close attention to detail.
Offers to assist others when needed.
Good interpersonal and communication skills.
Organizational and time management skills.
Basic computer skills.
Education/Licensure/Certification:
Some college or an Associates degree. Nutrition Science focus preferred.
