Staff Engineer - Hybrid (Engineering)

What you will do:

We would like you to support the Manager of Screw Compressor Engineering by providing in house technical leadership and direction for projects.  Responsibilities for the position includes responsibility for product specification, new product architecture, long range planning for product families, providing expert technical support to other departments, and resolution of difficult customer issues.

How you will do it:

  • Define new product specifications.
  • Resolve areas for improvement of existing designs.
  • Provide clear technical direction to designers' drafters and review complex 3D models.
  • Initiates product improvement and cost reduction activities.
  • Resolve test objectives and provide direction to junior engineers in the generation of test requests and plans and aid interpreting results.
  • Review test reports generated by junior engineers to ensure the highest level of technical accuracy.
  • Provides direction to junior engineers for test lab data reduction and design of experiments.
  • Lead the failure analysis effort for return compressor evaluation and disposition of parts and generate or direct the generation of root cause failure reports for the customer.
  • Provides technical support to Purchasing, Service, Sales, and Marketing groups within JCI.
  • Provides technical support for the plant relative to assembly and test processes.
  • Provides authoritative technical support to other departments within JCI.
  • Optimally defend product design and analyses to certifying agencies, such as Bureau Veritas, and UL.
  • Successfully defend root cause failure analysis to customers and third-party experts.  
  • Generate technical documents and approve technical documents generated by junior engineers for use within and outside the company.
  • Analyzes, designs, modifies and/or troubleshoots mechanical sub-components and sub-systems based on test data.
  • Adhere to the Company's Code of Conduct and Business Ethics standards.
  • Mentor junior engineers.

What we look for:

Qualified candidate must have an excellent understanding of theories, concepts, technical principles, and processes related to mechanical and electrical aspects of compressors.  The successful candidate must show strength in mechanical design and be able to conceptualize and advise the implementation of design ideas into the product. Tackle the most difficult problems encountered by customers in the field and generate design improvement ideas from them. Study and fully understand the system operation to resolve problems that lead to compressor failure.

  • BS in Mechanical Engineer or equivalent experience. MS is helpful.
  • Minimum 10 years' experience in rotating equipment such as pumps and compressor. Screw compressor design is a plus.
  • Experience in a design and product development environment.
  • Basic understanding of fundamental business knowledge.
  • Strong personal communication ability with capabilities in MS Office Suite, etc.
  • PE preferred.

OTHER:

Qualified candidate will be encouraged to be onsite at least 60% of the time. They will actively supervise testing in the Engineering Test Lab while projects they are assigned are being tested to ensure test data validity early in the testing cycle.
