Job Description
Intuitive's da Vinci and Ion systems push the frontier of human-machine interaction by fusing many technologies into a core product experience - technologies such as immersive 3D vision, real-time haptic interfaces and robotic instruments and accessories. Industrial Design is a key function at Intuitive that works across multiple technical disciplines to envision possibilities and synthesize needs & requirements into beautifully designed, high performance solutions that make customers' experience of using complex surgical devices safe, easy to learn, and confidence-inspiring.

The Manager, Industrial Design manages a team of industrial designers and collaborates with adjacent design teams (interaction, visual, creative), brand, mechanical engineering, clinical engineering, human factors, and product marketing teams to design beautiful, honest, and high performance products and experiences. They strive to improve existing products and create future solutions that are highly usable, manufacturable, and aligned with the intuitive brand. They do this by guiding efforts with a holistic mindset, helping to establish appropriate usability and design criteria, leading a design team, and collaborating with partners to bring new products to life. This includes managing physical design development from early product definition and development phases through product launch, as well supporting validation of product usability through testing with representative users.

Role And Responsibilities

Drive industrial design efforts

Nurtures relationships with partners and stakeholders within the businesses Leads the design of physical products, product ecosystems, and design strategies from concept to implementation. Identifies, frames, and acts on opportunities to drive product design and user experience consistency, and envisions compelling new product possibilities for the business. Creates compelling presentations and regularly presents to business leaders and stakeholders.

Advocate For Product Usability And Design Excellence

Serves as a leading champion of product usability and design excellence by collaborating with other design teams (interaction, visual, creative), clinical development, human factors, product marketing to inform and prove designs. Collaborates with mechanical, electrical, and manufacturing engineering to explore, define attributes, and execute highly crafted new product designs.

Functionally Manage a Team Of Designers

  • Establishes group objectives and individual work goals for the team, consistent with overall product development and business goals.
  • Plans resources, assigns tasks, sets priorities, establishes metrics and tracks progress for team.
  • Facilitates and drives informed, efficient, and collaborative decision-making.
  • Nurtures personal development of team members. Establishes goals and tracks performance.
  • Recruits and retains creative and highly capable industrial design professionals.
  • Seeks out and adopts best practices from industry to develop and improve Industrial Design processes at Intuitive.
Qualifications
Skills/Job Requirements:
  • Minimum of 8 years of experience in product design and development.
  • Minimum Bachelor's or Master's degree, in Industrial Design.
  • Experience leading industrial designers, including mentoring staff, negotiation of project scopes with stakeholders, and general project management ability.
  • Proven record of design excellence and shepherding of highly usable and beautiful products to market that contain sophisticated user interactions.
  • Excellent teamwork skills with natural inclination to collaborate across multiple disciplines.
  • Brings holistic view. High-level of confidence and articulation of design approach and POV. Exceptional aesthetic and storytelling skills. Passionate for delivering the best possible experience.
  • Ability to travel up to 10% of the time.

Base Salary Range Region 1: $169,800 USD - $244,400 USD
Base Salary Range Region 2: $144,300 USD - $207,700 USD
