Lead Technician (Biotech)



TransCore (TRN) is seeking a full-time Lead Technician to join our team in our Matthews, NC location.  Although the position is based in Matthews; installation, repair, and maintenance of electronic toll collection equipment will occur at various times and locations throughout the State of North Carolina. The candidate selected must have the ability to travel for extended periods of time during installation projects.

Job Summary:   This position serves as a liaison between the Maintenance Manager, Maintenance Supervisor, and the Field Technicians. The position will perform on-site servicing repair and/or installation of electronic toll collection equipment. This job may include any aspect of field support including troubleshooting and repair of electronic equipment, systems, and wiring; installation of equipment; upgrades, modifications, programming; preventive maintenance actions; documentation. Assists managers and supervisors with solving field problems and distribution of equipment, parts, and information to field technicians.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities include the following. Other duties may be assigned.

  • Completes and analyzes reports, logs and performs shift-to-shift communications in accordance with established policies, procedures and local practices.
  • Installation, preventive and corrective maintenance of toll collection equipment to include computers, video surveillance equipment, RFID, and network communications equipment.
  • Restores equipment to operational status as quickly as possible.
  • Maintenance of spare equipment and parts inventory.
  • Recommends preventive maintenance action and program.
  • May recommend and develop local administrative practices.
  • Makes recommendations regarding the application or utilization of the system and its components.
  • Supervises and assists with the training of technicians.
  • Responds to corrective maintenance requests or alarms within an acceptable time frame.
  • Completes paperwork accurately and in a timely manner.

Supervisory Responsibilities:  This position does have supervisory responsibilities.

Education:  Associate degree (A.A.) or equivalent from two-year college or technical school in electronics, engineering or a combination of education, training, and work experience.

Required Skills & Experience: 

  • Minimum 4-6 years of relevant working experience in electronics maintenance.
  • Travel for extended period of times during installation projects.
  • Have familiarity with the use of laptop computers for use in field equipment calibration and basic web and email applications
  • Must maintain NC driver's license in good standing as verified by TransCore.
  • Driving record must be free of DUI/DWI for three-year period prior to employment.
  • Good writing, communication, mechanical skills.
  • Good working knowledge of Windows operating systems and Microsoft Office Suite.
  • Some experience working with Linux preferred.

 Desired Skills & Experience: 

  • Prior toll maintenance and electronic bench repair experience.
  • Fiber optic splicing and testing, AVI tuning, and Maintenance of Traffic (MOT) 

Other Requirements: 

  • Acts independently to determine methods and procedures on new assignments. Leads or supervises the activities of other non-exempt personnel.
  • Consistently works on complex assignments requiring independent action and a high degree of initiative to resolve issues. Makes recommendations for new procedures.
  • Ability to solve practical problems and deal with a variety of concrete variables in situations where only limited standardization exists. Ability to interpret a variety of instructions furnished in written, oral, diagram, or schedule form.
  • Required to stand; sit; use hands to finger, handle, or feel; reach with hands and arms; stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl and talk or hear.
  • Occasionally required to walk and climb or balance.
  • Regularly lift and /or move up to 10 pounds and occasionally lift and/or move up to 50 pounds. 
  • Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception and ability to adjust focus.
  • Frequent exposure to moving mechanical parts; outside weather conditions and moving traffic.
  • Occasionally exposed to high, precarious places; fumes or airborne particles and risk of electrical shock.
  • Noise level in the work environment is usually moderate
  • Employee is expected to work alone and without supervision
