Shift: Sunday - Thursday 6:00 am - 2:30 pm

This position will be in the Vitalant Reference Lab. We provide support to contracted hospitals having patient samples requiring special serologic problem solving, as well as providing antigen negative red cell components, crossmatched platelet components and phone consultation. We also provide support to our Donor Testing and HLA Laboratories.
PRIMARY PURPOSE:
Under minimal supervision and using independent judgment, this position is responsible for performing routine testing of biological specimens and reviewing test results. This position is also responsible for providing skilled technical support in the laboratory. As directed, incumbents will assist with the administrative functions of the laboratory such as coordinating work flow and approval of test results.
DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
Performs all assigned duties in compliance with internal SOPs and external regulations. Brings compliance issues to the attention of management.
Provide value for the customer by supporting departmental and individual goal achievement, effective communications, process improvement and compliance.

Performs high complexity testing (e.g., stem cell processing, CBC differentials, antigen screens, antibody ID, and cross match).
Performs quality control testing on components produced from whole blood, platelet apheresis, and apheresis red cell products.
Maintains accurate records and documentation.
Resolves problems between departments that prevent production and distribution of blood components.
Assists in administrative functions, as assigned.
Performs training and competency assessment for moderate and high complexity testing, as required.
Performs preventive maintenance on equipment; analyzes complex problems; and recommends additional service, as needed.
Provides technical support/liaison to center operations and external customers.
Performs all other duties, at the discretion of management, as assigned.

REQUIREMENTS:
Knowledge/Education
Bachelor's degree in a chemical, physical, biological, medical technology or clinical laboratory science required.
Certification as a Medical Technologist/MLS by a recognized certifying agency or CLIA equivalent for high complexity testing required.
Licenses/Certifications
Certification as a Medical Technologist/MLS by a recognized certifying agency required or CLIA equivalent for high complexity testing required.
State licensure, as required by regulations.
Experience
Minimum of two years of experience in a clinical laboratory setting or SBB Certification required.
Experience in developing and conducting formal training preferred.
Experience with LIS/BECs software programs preferred.
Skills/Abilities
Must be able to stand for long periods of time, bend, and lift up to 50 lbs.
Must be detail oriented and possess strong communication, organization, analytical, and decision-making skills and be able to comprehend and apply clinical laboratory procedures and theory.
Must be able to maintain donor, patient and employee confidentiality.
Must possess basic keyboarding skills and the ability to handle and operate laboratory equipment.
Must be able to work flexible shifts and overtime when necessary.
