Job Summary:
We are currently seeking a Scientist / Systems Design Engineer for our R&D department who will work on sample holder and stage systems. This position will be based out of our Pleasanton, CA office.
The role will involve participation in all aspects of the technical development of sample holders for Transmission Electron Microscope (TEM) and sample stages for Scanning Transmission Microscopy (SEM).
Must be able to travel occasionally, domestically and overseas (as permitted by COVID-related restrictions.)
Position Requirements:
Specific Duties and Responsibilities:
• Responsible for system specifications, including design verification.
• Translate product requirements into technical requirements.
• Provide multi-layered technical expertise for next generation initiatives
• Participate in the design process for new holders and stages.
• Integrate, test and troubleshoot new designs during prototyping.
• Devise and document technical documentation for testing and troubleshooting.
• Provide technical support during new product integration and service escalations.
Required knowledge and skills:
• A strong knowledge at the intersection of applied physics and mechanical engineering.
• Experience in instrumentation development and building scientific equipment.
• Experience working with or developing cryogenic equipment.
• Must be an intermediate or advanced level user of Microsoft Excel.
Desirable skill and experience:
• Intermediate or advanced user of computer aided design software. Autodesk Inventor experience ideal.
• Experience simulating mechanical design proposals including aspects such as thermal performance, modes of vibration and flexure motion.
• Light optics or electron optics modeling.
• Experience operating a SEM or TEM.
• Knowledge of and experience with Micro-electromechanical systems (MEMS.)
• Systems engineering process experience, such as architectural analysis or creation of error budgets.
• Project management experience in the instrumentation space.
Preferred qualifications:
• Typically requires a minimum of 5 years of related experience with a Bachelor's degree; or 3 years and a Master's degree; or a PhD with relevant experience.
