The USGS National Geologic Map Database (NGMDB) is a Congressionally mandated initiative. It is administratively within the USGS National Cooperative Geologic Mapping Program (NCGMP). The NGMDB's mission is conducted in collaboration with the Association of American State Geologists (AASG, representing the State geological surveys), and with other USGS Programs as well as Universities. The NGMDB has, since its inception in 1995, been responsible for a wide range of technical, scientific, and managerial tasks. The anticipated needed assistance will support the NGMDB, enabling its staff to perform mission-essential functions and execute day-to-day tasks required to support this Congressionally mandated activity.
Akima is hiring a full time employee to support the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) National Geologic Map Database (NGMDB) with scientific and technical support.
Receive, evaluate, and prepare publication citation content received from State geological surveys. The content will include corrections and new publications that will be loaded to NGMDB.
Use existing NGMDB web forms to make corrections and updates to existing citations.
Identify broken or inadequate NGMDB links to external publisher's websites. Prepare corrections in spreadsheets or make updates via NGMDB web forms.
Identify, communicate, scan, and process missing images from NGMDB Product Description Pages.
Track and regularly report to NGMDB staff the status of work for all tasks.
Knowledge of basic geologic principles and techniques of geologic map making.
Skilled in typical office software (e.g., for MS Excel and Word), and Adobe Photoshop (for image processing).
Ability to learn how to operate digitization equipment, applicable software, and processes (e.g., for large-format scanner).
Skilled in library research techniques sufficient to locate applicable references and update NGMDB content as needed.
Skilled in oral and written communication needed to summarize information and provide status reports.
Professional manner, ability to work well with other project members and with State geological surveys and other cooperators.
Bachelor of Science.
