JOB SUMMARY
Reports to the Director, Patient Care Services (or the Transport Coordinator). Coordinates and provides critical care/transport services to severely injured/high-risk patients within the referral region of Memorial Hospital of South Bend (MHSB). Systematically assesses the needs of patients and initiates, implements and evaluates individualized care provided at referral sites and while en route to Memorial Hospital or other regional/specialized facilities. Serves as a resource to the patient care units of MHSB by providing expert care and short-term treatment interventions while awaiting transport calls.

JOB SPECIFICATIONS
Education and Experience
The knowledge, skills and abilities as indicated below are normally acquired through the successful completion of a Registered Nurse program; a Bachelor's degree in Nursing is preferred. A minimum of two years of critical care RN experience (within the last five years) and a current license to practice as a Registered Nurse in the State of Indiana are required. Prior experience as a mobile transport nurse is preferred. Advanced Life Support Certificate, specific to the critical care area, is required. CPN or CCRN certification is required or to be obtained within the first year of employment. Must successfully complete the Trauma Nurse Core Course (TNCC) and Emergency Nursing Pediatrics Course (ENPC), as applicable, within the first year of employment.

Demonstrates a high level of knowledge and competency in performing complex patient care procedures, assessments and treatment techniques specific to critical care patient population.
Demonstrates advanced analytical skills to solve complex problems, work autonomously and make independent decisions related to patient care and treatment in critical care settings.
Demonstrates excellent organization skills and the ability to work independently; also demonstrates the ability to set and direct team priorities and accomplish goals.
Demonstrates knowledge of ambulance and transport equipment, including the analytical skills needed to modify equipment to individual patient needs.
Demonstrates the communication skills (both verbal and written) necessary to communicate in a clear and concise manner and to obtain and report appropriate information needed by other team members.
Demonstrates the guest relations and interpersonal skills necessary to interact tactfully and effectively with Physicians, Nursing staff, patients, family members and other staff.
Demonstrates the ability to work effectively in highly stressful situations with severely ill or injured high-risk patients and in close proximity with a small group of staff. Also effectively manages recurrent exposure to stressful situations.
Demonstrates the strong leadership skills needed to maintain effective team-oriented behaviors and communicate and support the needs of staff members in an effective and non-threatening manner.
Requires meticulous adherence to sterile techniques and universal precautions.
Demonstrates proficiency in basic computer skills (i.e., data entry, word processing and spreadsheets). A basic understanding of database applications is desired.
Working Conditions
Works in the mobile transport ambulance and referral hospital and clinics during the patient transporting process.
Works in a patient care environment with staff, patients, Physicians and others, requiring physical exertion, frequent changes in job demands, certain undesirable patient care activities and possible exposure to bio-hazards.
Possible exposure to emotionally volatile situations.
Work hours may vary to meet scheduling needs of the Department.
Consequence of errors in performance may result in patient injury or death, Hospital and staff risk and/or financial loss.
Requires the ability to arrive at Memorial Hospital South Bend within 30 minutes of receiving notification of patient transport.
Physical Demands
Requires the physical ability and stamina (i.e. to walk/stand for prolonged periods of time, ride on ambulance, push and lift stretchers and carts up to 50 pounds, lift or pull patients and equipment at a maximum of 35 pounds unassisted, over 35 pounds requires assistance, provide CPR, etc.) to perform the essential functions of the position. Also demonstrates the manual dexterity to work with hands and arms when performing daily duties and the visual and auditory acuity to read cardiac monitors, equipment and perform patient assessments and treatments.
