Orphan Drug Research Assistant (R&D)



SUMMARY

The Infant Botulism Treatment and Prevention Program (IBTPP) is the developer and sole distributor of the orphan drug Botulism Immune Globulin Intravenous (Human) (BabyBIG®). BabyBIG® is the only treatment available for the orphan (rare) disease known as infant botulism. The IBTPP is established as a fee-supported, special fund activity of the State of California. Our team consists of a small, dynamic group of professionals dedicated to improving the diagnosis, prevention and treatment of infant botulism and related disorders.  Program information may be found at: www.infantbotulism.org

The Orphan Drug Research Assistant (ODRA) role contributes to the creation of new knowledge of the IBTPP by obtaining and organizing primary medical and fiscal records of patients with infant botulism. The position within the IBTPP provides an opportunity for involvement with a multidisciplinary medical and public health research team that does orphan drug development and distribution, molecular biology, microbiology, epidemiology, and regulatory (FDA) affairs. The ODRA contributes to regulatory and epidemiology aspects of the program and provides service both to external callers and program staff.  We are seeking candidates whose long-term interests are in medicine, medical research and/or public health. 

The hourly rate for this position is $20.00 per hour.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

  • Provide assistance to callers with suspected infant botulism cases needing BabyBIG®
  • Handle communications with physicians, hospitals, consultants, contractors, vendors, and staff
  • After training, maintain orphan drug document compliance under State and federal regulations
  • Assist with processing regulatory documentation and data entry related to BabyBIG® orders
  • Request and process patient records and itemized bills (mostly electronic)
  • Review and file patient medical records
  • Calculate, enter into database, and file medical cost records
  • Track BabyBIG® infusion times and dates and patient discharge dates
  • Other BabyBIG® or related regulatory projects and needs as assigned

JOB QUALIFICATIONS

  • Exceptional communication skills, well-spoken and professional phone manner
  • Ability to read and consistently follow detailed instructions and program protocols
  • Ability to read and write English well, including spelling, grammar, and punctuation
  • Detail-oriented, ability to follow-through on tasks and projects
  • Experienced with standard business office practices and etiquette
  • Ability to handle medical and sensitive information with absolute confidentiality
  • Ability to work independently and efficiently
  • Punctuality and promptness
  • Well-organized and able to follow a systematic method of performing a task
  • Quick learner
  • Ability to speak fluent Spanish is a plus (not required)

Education/Experience 

  • Prior office administration experience required, approximately 1-2 years (part-time is acceptable) that includes general office functions and dealing with the public or outside liaisons by phone, preferably in a medical/scientific environment
  • Current university/college student: coursework in biological sciences, pre-med or public health preferred.
  • Professional phone call response experience required
  • Skilled in computer applications including email, spreadsheet programs (Excel or similar), word processing (Word or similar), databases and internet browsers
  • A second or third year-student who can offer longevity to the program preferred.
  • Document management experience preferred
  • This role requires handling the office independently at times; candidates should have excellent professional interpersonal and communication skills, especially by phone, and be able to effectively multi-task in a sometimes fast-paced environment.

Notes:  This position requires coming to the CDPH/IBTPP office in Richmond, CA, which has free parking and is accessible by BART/shuttle. IBTPP will work with hired students around class schedules, but prefers the work be done in 2-3 four- or five-hour shifts each week. The work must be conducted during regular business hours of M-F, 8a.m-5p.m.
